FAQs

Q: I'm a new instructor. Where do I start?

A: Congratulations on joining the Guest Faculty at the Information School! This website features many resources that we hope will make your teaching experience enjoyable and interesting. Some key tasks for new instructors are listed below. If you have specific questions, please contact Cris Mesling, Academic Services Director.

  1. Make sure all of your hiring paperwork has been turned in to Crystal Yost.
  2. Once you have been added to the administrative system, set up your UW NetID.
  3. If you would like to use a textbook for your course, the University Bookstore prefers to have the order by May 25th for Autumn Quarter, by October 25th for Winter Quarter, by January 25th for Spring Quarter and by April 25th for Summer Quarter. If the date has passed for the quarter you are teaching, just get the textbook order in as soon as possible.
  4. If you will be using journal articles or other readings, a course website, an email listserv, or the computer terminal in your classroom, consult the relevant pages of this website.
  5. Remember that there is help available! If you have any questions about the instructional resources available or are wondering what tools are used in a typical iSchool course, contact the GA Crew.

Q: It's snowing! Is my class cancelled?

A: No faculty, staff, or student should attempt to travel to campus if they believe it would be unsafe to do so because of snow, sleet, or ice. The University's statements and policy on suspension of operations in inclement weather can be found at "Is the UW Open?"

On inclement days, faculty should pay attention to media reports (the major local television and radio stations), the main UW web site at www.washington.edu, and the UW information line at (206) UWS-INFO (897-4636) or 1-888-897-4636.  If all UW classes are suspended for the day, it would be best if faculty could send messages to the appropriate electronic class mailing lists to confirm for students that a particular class won't meet.

If University operations are going on, instructors should of course make every effort to meet their scheduled classes.  If an individual instructor is unable to get to campus due to weather, he or she should:

  1. Contact the student services main office (206-543-1794) and the Associate Dean for Academics (office 206-685-9626) and let them know what the situation is.

  2. Send an appropriate email message to the class list (is class canceled, will there be a substitute, would you like them to use the time to work on upcoming assignments, etc.).

Student Services staff will post a sign on a classroom door of a canceled class if the class is in Mary Gates Hall, and will refer student inquiries to faculty members if no word has been received.

These numbers and the University's policies on inclement weather and suspended operations are located on the Human Resources Web site.

The University of Washington website usually has a status report on the home page at http://www.washington.edu/

The Suspended Operations policy is available at http://www.washington.edu/faculty/facsenate/handbook/04-07-04.html
