Autumn 2007
This
assignment will give you experience in exploring criteria by which to evaluate
resources for use by a given community or institution.
First
of all, you should review the various resources about
evaluation available via the course Web site (materials from Choice,
Booklist, the Internet Public Library, RUSQ, other review sources,
and so on). See how these reviews are
written, and how they differ based on the intended audience of the review and
the resources in question.
Then,
based on your interest, you should choose one of the following subject areas
and audiences. For that subject area and
audience, you should list the 3-5 criteria you think would be most important
and useful in evaluating potential reference resources, discussing each
individually (and together, if you like) and contrasting them with other
potential criteria you think of lesser importance. Finally, you should choose what you believe
to be the most important criterion,
and justify your choice.
The
areas are:
·
on film to help a general audience find
and learn about specific films and about film in general
·
on LGBT studies to help an undergraduate audience
understand the field and discipline, and/or decide on topics for senior theses
in the area
·
on terrorism to support a general academic
library collection
·
on career guidance for
photography to
help a high school/college audience decide on, plan for a career in the area
Your
submissions will be evaluated on the criteria you identify and use, the
decisions you make, appropriateness for audience, and the overall quality of
your presentation.
You
are to work on this assignment on your own.
Please be sure that each submission has the
last 4 digits of your student number and not your name in the upper right
hand corner of the first page.
Please note that this assignment has
been extended, and includes a Part B; both parts
are now due November 7 (revised 10/24/2007)
